Beavers are the largest rodent in North America. Most adult beavers weigh from 35 to 50 pounds and some individual beavers have been known to reach will over 100 pounds. The beaver is a stout rodent and lives in a water type environments.

The beaver has an under-fur that is grey in color, and its long guard hairs are course with colors from a yellowish brown to black, with reddish brown the most common color. The beavers tail is flat, scaled, and virtually hairless. The beaver will also use their tale to slap the surface of the water to warn other beavers of danger. The beaver has large front teeth that grow continuously throughout its life.

Beavers are typically a nocturnal animal but is occasionally seen during the day. A female beaver will generally give birth to 3 or 4 kits between March and June, and will nurse them up to three months. The beaver kits will become sexually active in approximately two years.

A beavers habitat is anywhere that a year round water source is available such as lakes, ponds, swamps, wetlands, ditches, drains, and natural springs. A beaver will generate a dam to make its habitat to its liking. These dams are generated were running water is located such as road culverts, creeks, ditches etc. These dams that the beaver generates will change their habitat to suite the beavers needs. The materials that beavers use to construct dams could consist of rocks, wood, metal, fence posts, wood planks, trees, mud and what ever a beaver can get their hands on to make a suitable environment.

Most damage that a beaver will cause while making their dams is flooding, tree cutting, bank burrowing. Some damages that beavers have caused is roadway flooding, housing development flooding, road ditches and culverts being damned up causing flooding, girdled trees, removal of ornamental trees from landscaped yards, farm fields flooded and many more. There are many solutions that we can provide that will prevent tree damage and flooding damage.
